The Map Is Rigged Against Us: Why Newport, Huntington & Long Beach Lose Under Prop 50!
What do Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, and Long Beach have in common?
Aside from the coastlines, surf breaks, and small businesses that fuel our communities, we now share something else: we’re pawns in Sacramento’s political chess game.
Prop 50 — the so-called “Election Rigging Response Act” — isn’t about fair representation. It’s about grabbing power. And our district is one of the biggest casualties.
The Problem Hidden in the Lines
On paper, redistricting sounds boring. Lines on a map. Shifting borders. Who cares, right?
But those lines are everything. They decide who speaks for you in Washington. They decide if your concerns — coastal erosion, port traffic, over-development, or taxes — even make it onto the agenda.
And with Prop 50, those lines aren’t being drawn for communities like ours. They’re being drawn for politicians.
Why It’s Bad for Everyone
For local voters:
Your voice gets diluted. Newport’s interests aren’t the same as Long Beach’s. Huntington isn’t the same as downtown Long Beach. Lumping us together means none of us gets real representation.
For Democrats:
Sure, the map looks like a short-term win. But when leaders override the independent commission we voted for — when they say, “our rules don’t count anymore” — they hand Republicans the same weapon to use down the road. Today’s advantage is tomorrow’s disaster.
For Republicans:
The intent is clear: slice up districts to minimize your vote. But that doesn’t just silence Republicans — it silences moderates, independents, and anyone who wants competitive elections.
The Bigger Picture
Remember why Californians voted to create the independent redistricting commission in the first place?
Because we wanted to end backroom deals. We wanted maps drawn by citizens, not politicians. We wanted fairness.
Prop 50 spits on that. It’s political grandstanding dressed up as “fighting fire with fire.” But fighting gerrymandering with more gerrymandering doesn’t fix democracy. It breaks it further.
Why This District Matters
Our stretch of coast has a unique voice:
Newport’s families and retirees worried about taxes and coastal safety.
Huntington’s working communities balancing tourism and affordability.
Long Beach’s port economy, immigrant neighborhoods, and environmental concerns.
Bundling all that into one district isn’t representation. It’s exploitation. We’re not getting a seat at the table. We’re the menu.
Get Involved
This isn’t about left or right. This is about fair or rigged.
And right now, our district is being rigged.
Prop 50 undermines the will of the people, silences coastal voices, and tells us our votes only matter when they benefit Sacramento’s agenda.
We can’t let this stand.
